Coronavirus Impacts Cannes Film Festival; Event That Sees Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor On The Red Carpet Called Off?

With Governments of every country trying the curb the spread of deadly Coronavirus, it is being advised that people should not gather at one place in larger numbers. This leads to a question whether the annual Cannes Film Festival will take place or not, this year.

Coronavirus has scared everyone. The virus that originated in China has reached almost every part of the globe. People are now advised to avoid gatherings and step out in the crowd, in order, to curb the spread the Covid-19. With this, majore events happening all of the world are getting affected. A few major shows at Paris Fashion Week were called off because of the same. Now, the doubt remains on the annual Cannes Film Festival which is expected to take place in May. 

Cannes Film Festival that happens in French Riviera sees the biggest names from the film industry. From India, stars like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone and others are regulars on the red carpet. However this year, they may or may not have to cancel their trip to Cannes. The grand event is expected to take place from May 12 to May 23 and so far, no announcement over its cancellation has been made. However, reportedly, the Cannes based international television conference, MipTV has been cancelled after receiving an official request from the French Government. 

Further, a report in Indiwire suggests that the organisers will soon announce the official selection of films for this year. The report states, "The festival, however, continues to downplay the drama. On Friday, it sent out a release confirming plans to announce its Official Selection on April 16, per usual."

It's not just Cannes, other events like Indian Premier League, IIFA and premieres of many International films have also been affected by Coronavirus scare. BCCI is contemplating on cancelling IPL while IIFA has been pushed to a later date. The release of new James Bond movie has been pushed to November while recently, Katy Perry had to cancel her concert in Australia due to the same.
