Stories like Una are important and must-watches for everyone, especially in the time we live in. When we came across the film on Netflix’s algorithm, it seemed like just another thriller that nobody had heard about but as we delved deeper, we found that Una in fact was a well-acclaimed film that had been celebrated in the best film festivals worldwide.
Based on a popular and controversial play, Una is about a young woman, played by Rooney Mara who was sexually abused as a child and who comes face-to-face with her abuser much later in life. This is when both their worlds collide and for her, this means a re-ignition of her past trauma and for him, it rocks his entire life’s stability.
What is interesting about Una in particular is that the girl decides to face her abuser head-on and have a conversation with him. She wants him to know that he ruined his life and that her father wanted to kill him. She’s coming from a place of intense anger and pain, and she wants to know his motivations.
But that’s the thing isn’t it? Like in life, Una doesn’t really provide easy answers, because there are none. It just raises enough questions to make you think. It’s an important film in an age where sexual assault is finally being talked about and for a sensitive topic like assault is, the matter has been handled quite well.
With some of the finest performances, especially by a Rooney Mara who is not scared to bare it all in front of the camera, Una is a fine watch. It will wake you up and make you think about things that matter.
