Is 13 Reasons Why Better Than Riverdale? Battle Of The Teen Dramas
Netflix has managed to redefine teenage dramas. Gone are the days of playful, fun teenage films and shows, both 13 Reasons Why and Riverdale are dark, real teenage dramas. Both immensely popular shows among teens and adults alike, with the release of Season 3 for 13 Reasons Why, we decided to compare the two shows and see which emerges as the better one.

For Archie comic fans, Riverdale can crush their childhoods. A much darker version of the comics, Riverdale delves into the lives of our favourite characters, Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead. For one, the show kickstarts with a murder, something that is unimaginable in the comic world. Our favourite gang is not all good, they all have dark and mysterious sides to them. There are drugs, dysfunctional families, a murder investigation, an affair with a teacher and even a cult! Riverdale is a racy show which takes you on one roller coaster ride after another.

Each of the three seasons of 13 Reasons Why has its own format. The first season, and probably the best one, investigates the suicide of Hannah Baker who has left behind 13 tapes with 13 reasons why she killed herself, ending in a horrific rape. Season 2 explores the trial of the rapist, Bryce Walker who seems to have raped other girls in the school too. And finally, Season 3 starts with the mysterious death of Bryce and the investigation thereof. It explores some of the most pressing issues affecting teenagers today and brings them to light in a way that is free-flowing with the story.

Which show manages to be better? Let’s face it, teenage life is full of angst and is one of the most troubling time periods in our lives. While both shows are extremely well made and full of suspense, 13 Reasons Why emerges as the clear winner. Tackling issues like depression, bullying, drug use, sexual assault, PTSD, abortion and treating these issues with sensitivity is something that the show manages to do. More importantly, it has also initiated a lot of conversations around these issues and provided resources for the mental well-being of teenagers.
