2019 has been a great year when it comes to Indian web shows, which have constantly pushed the envelope when it comes to creating compelling content for not just an Indian but a global audience. Memorable shows have also lent to giving birth to memorable characters who remain with us long after we have watched the shows.
1. Sobhita Dhulipala – Made In Heaven
Kick-starting the year on the best note was Prime original show, Made in Heaven directed by Zoya Akhtar. Tara, Sobhita’s character and the protagonist of the show, is a complex woman, rarely depicted onscreen before. A competent professional, a good friend and a loyal wife – Tara is all those things and more. A lot of credit for Tara should go to the writers of the show, but also to Sobhita – who you could refer to as Tara after watching the show.
2. Shefali Shah – Delhi Crime
Delhi Crime might not have been an immensely popular show but it definitely was a strong one. Based on one of the most controversial cases in India, the Delhi gang rape of 2012, Delhi Crime tells the story from the perspective of the Delhi police, headed by Vartika Chaturvedi (Shefali Shah). Her strong yet silent performance is sometimes the most chilling thing about the show.
3. Manoj Bajpayee – The Family Man
The latest and much-deserving addition to the list comes in the form of one of the most well-respected actors in the country who has now made his mark on the web as well. Playing Srikant in Prime original show, The Family Man, Bajpayee stole the show as a man who always has to balance vulnerability and ruthlessness as a part-time spy and part-time husband and father.
