The Spy, A Netflix Original Series, Starring Sacha Baron Cohen Is A Slow Burn That Pays Off
At first glance, Netflix’s latest mini-series, The Spy, will remind you of Homeland. A couple of seasons of the show dealt with Mossad and coincidentally, the makers of The Spy, Gideon Raff also created Prisoners of War which was later adapted to Homeland. The Spy manages to be a compelling watch about a fascinating true story, although fictionalized and dramatized.

Based on the life of Eli Cohen, one of the most famous Mossad Agents, the show traces his life and how he went on to shape Israel’s history. Carrying out a massive undercover operation, he lands up in Syria and makes his way through the politics there. Intended to take all the intelligence back to Israel, as is true with any spy show or film, there are many a points in the show when it is a close call and his identity is almost revealed. The duality of a patriotic spy and a family man is also explored.

Sacha Baron Cohen is really the life of the show. After seeing his comedic, almost caricature-ish, performance in Borat, The Spy is really proof of his talent. He shines in every scene at every downfall, every roadblock, you root for him. You wish for this man to just get home safe to his wife. That’s more than you can say about a lot of characters on TV. You also end up rooting for his wife and his handler.

The Spy is a show that sometimes seems slow, but is beautifully put together in the end. While it might not be the best spy thriller out there or even the best Netflix original of the month, it is worth a watch for no other reason than the fabulous Mr. Cohen. Catch it today!
