A lot of films delve into addiction of very kinds, but few deal with them with empathy and sensitivity, Beautiful Boy is one of those films. Based on the best-selling book called Beautiful Boy: A Father’s Journey Through His Son’s Addiction, a memoir written by David Sheff, the film is a beautiful one that takes us through a heart-breaking journey.
When it comes to addiction, not only is it tough for the person going through it but also their loved ones and family members. It is a testing time that tends to affect all personal relationships. Beautiful Boy shows us the good, bad and ugly of this problem. It is the story of Sheff, played by Steve Carell and his son Nic, played by Timothee Chalamet.
Nic is your normal teenager, a good student, an athlete, everyone’s favourite boy. Suddenly, he develops an addiction to crystal meth and everything shatters. His parents get to know about his addiction and what follows is his path to recovery. His father stands with him every step of the way which makes Beautiful Boy a classic father and son story.
Two fantastic actors play the parts of father and son here so there is no doubt that the performances are excellent, but what stands out are the little moments of the film – enough to make you cry and others that make you smile. One heart-breaking visual that stays with you is when Nic cannot find a single empty spot on his arm to stick a needle into. Thus is the reality of addiction.
Beautiful Boy is a lesson in empathy and love. It is a lesson in unconditional love and good parenting. Timothee Chalamet has our heart again after Call Me By Your Name and Steve Carell has our heart forever.
