Why Netflix’s Otherhood Is Worth A Watch
The first thing you notice about Netflix Original film, Otherhood is the dazzling star cast consisting of three excellent actors. Patricia Arquette (of Boyhood fame), Felicity Huffman (of Desperate Housewives fame) and Alicia Bassett (of Black Panter fame) play the three friends leading the film.

These are women in their middle age who are close friends because of their three sons who are now in their 20s and 30s and living away from them in New York. These women feel disconnected with their sons and when they realize that it’s Mother’s Day and they haven’t heard from them, they decide to go on a road trip. Going to their adult sons’ lives in the middle of New York and surprising them doesn’t seem like a great idea but they do it anyway, desperate for connection.

What follows is a hilarious, relatable and interesting turn of events which shocks both them and the viewers. Otherhood is a take on motherhood, female friendships and above all else, it is about finding yourself, no matter how old you are. Set against the glitz and glamour of life in Manhattan, these three women rediscover themselves as women and not as mothers. If you loved Sex and the City, Otherhood is for you!

The storyline is simple and it is entertaining from start to finish. We only wish that we had seen their sons’ lives in fuller ways – their characters seem inadequately fleshed out. Apart from that, Otherhood is an accurate representation of motherhood, of how often women lose sense of their selves when they become mothers and attach their identity to that of their children’s.

In a lot of ways, Otherhood is a coming of age story, not like the others where a teenager grows up to be an adult and finds his calling. This is the coming of age of a group of women who rediscover themselves and their friendships after their children grow up. It is a great watch!
