Mafia Review: It's Blah, Has Disappointment Written All Over It
Introduction

Thanks to the lockdown, we all are forced to not opt for outdoor games! It's just Indoor games that are keeping us entertained, however, it seems, Zee5 wants us to give up on Indoor games and rather play IN'Darrr' games. Confused? Well, it's all because of its brand new series titled Mafia!

First Impression

Even though the title of the show is Mafia, there is no gang-war, goons boasting power etc in it. Rather, the story is about a bunch of college friends who go on a trip to a place called Madhuban. While they enjoy themselves to the fullest, their fun is cut short when they face an unwanted incident. Cut to six years later, they go to the same bungalow for a 'reunion'. After a few drinks, they decide to play a game called 'Mafia'.

Further on, a fight ensues between the six friends, and like kids, they indulge in several arguments. And bang, there is an entry of an over-friendly, mysterious stranger whose car suffers a failure right outside the bungalow. The stranger is named Nitin Kumar played by Namit Das. As he struggles to fix his car, an enthusiastic girl part of the gang asks him to stay back. From here on, gear up to witness some strange turn of events

Beep Meter

Well, after watching Mafia, we can say that Anurag Kashyap's films are pretty sanitised and clean! Considering it is a digital platform, makers have the license to put out anything and everything, Mafia has gone overboard with the use of foul language. Needless to say, this show is very high on the beep meter.

Verdict

Well, if I sit to pen down the bizarre things this show has to offer, I bet it can go on till this lockdown lasts. However, I have narrowed it down to three things

First - These kids are drinking beer in the college canteen. Please, tell us which super-cool college is this?

Second - The show has some vague dialogues like "She was the cement of our group" and "Arre Mangal kaka kaise hain aap - Arre jungle mein mangal kar rahey hain."

Third - Well, friends do fight, but this bunch is full of noisy kids yelling at each other all the time. They scream so much that the debates on prime time news channels seem pretty bearable in front of them.

Well, I could go on, but I would rather not!

Coming to the acting chops, or the lack of it, I would like to say only one thing - NO COMMENTS! On second thoughts, we must give a little credit to Namit Das who is single-handedly trying to save this show. I really wonder what the writers were thinking? And the climax is oh-so-predictable. In times of lockdown, when users are consuming some great content on digital, Mafia comes as a disappointment. It's Blah!
