A renowned Hindi stage and film actor Makarand Deshpande, known for his epic cameo performance in Swades as a Sufi singer in the song Yunhi Chala Chal Rahi is now turning 61! This year the actor also made his grand debut in the Marathi drama industry with Sir Premacha Karaycha. Rita: Rita is a Marathi language film directed by Renuka Shahane starring Pallavi Joshi, Jakie Shroff, Renuka Shahane, Dr. Mohan Agashe, Tushar Dalvi, Suhasini Mule, Sai Tamhankar, Makarand Deshpande, Medha Jambotkar, Tucha Vaidya, Rajashree Nikam. The film is based on the book, Rita Welingkar, written by Shahane's mother, Shanta Gokhale.
Samaantar: Amol Palekar’s directorial starring Palekar himself opposite Sharmila Tagore was one of Makarand’s short yet impressive roles. He plays a negative role in the film that is responsible for a plot twist in the movie.
Ajintha: Nitin Chandrakant Desai’s romantic film starring Sonalee Kulkarni that is based on the historic heritage of Ajanta caves also saw Makarand in the role of Daulatya. A pre-historic character.
Makarand made his acting debut with inter-collegiate drama competitions, he later moved to become a writer and director of many Hindi plays. His Bollywood performance in, Jungle, Sarfarosh, Swades, Makdee, Bbuddah... Hoga Terra Baap and Darna Zaroori Hai were remembered for the methodical acting and immense talent.
