“Still Suffering,” Alka Yagnik Unable To Take Singing Assignments Due To Rare Hearing Loss Condition

Veteran playback singer Alka Yagnik has shared an update on her health, revealing that she continues to struggle with a rare hearing disorder that has significantly impacted her career. The singer, who first disclosed her condition in 2024, said she is “still suffering” and, as a result, has been unable to take up new singing assignments.

Due to her ongoing health issues, Yagnik has largely stayed away from public appearances and professional commitments. The condition, identified as a rare sensorineural hearing loss, was reportedly triggered by a viral attack and came as a sudden and unexpected setback in her life.

Opening up about the experience earlier, the singer had recalled how she suddenly lost her hearing after stepping out of a flight. Describing the moment as shocking, she said the diagnosis caught her completely off guard. She had then urged fans and well-wishers to keep her in their prayers as she tried to come to terms with the condition and focus on recovery.

Now, nearly two years later, Yagnik has admitted that she has not fully recovered and continues to deal with the effects of the disorder. Because of this, she has not been able to record new songs or accept fresh projects, keeping her away from the music industry she once dominated.

Despite these challenges, the celebrated singer was recently honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 2026, recognising her immense contribution to Indian music over the decades.

Yagnik also reflected on the changing landscape of music, remarking that contemporary songs have “lost their soul,” indicating her disconnect with current trends. While she continues to battle her condition, her legacy as one of Bollywood’s most iconic voices remains unmatched.
