Last night, many Mumbaikars had gathered for a LIVE music event at 'Paddy Fields Festival' being held at the NESCO Centre, Goregaon. Popular classical singers like Purbayan Chatterjee, Osman Mir, Abhijit Pohankar along with Bollywood singer Sukhwinder Singh were also in attendance and some of them including Sukhwinder were supposed to perform.
But it turned out to be a night of 'easier said than done'. The event which was supposed to kick-start at 7 pm ran late by about 2 hours from the word 'GO'. A few tempers got frayed left, right and centre- and that list of disgruntled people had Sukhwinder Singh right at its top.
The story goes that Sukhwinder was allocated the 10.45 pm slot. True to his style, he arrived at the venue at least three hours before his performance and expected a decorum of punctuality. Guess what! His turn came only at 12.45 am!!
But much before that, Singh had made a call to the organisers telling them in no uncertain terms that the delay was inordinately long and he would rather not perform. When all attempts to convince Singh failed, the organisers shot back to tell him that they would go on stage and announce to the public that he has had a health issue and would hence would not entertain them.
Sukhwinder did not endorse this and instead agreed to go on stage, but little did the organisers know what lay in store. Singh had decided to teach them a lesson-and how! In the video below you can see how Sukhwinder called out the back-stage story and asked the organisers to apologise to him! Yes, Singh did that!!
The crowd was shell-shocked when he added that he was so disheartened that he won't be able to perform. Repeated cheering egged him on to do just one song- Chhaiya Chhaiya (Dil Se). The moment, the second song began, Singh was seen walking out (mic in hand).
Sukhwinder did not return. Janta bhi chid gayi. Some of them started hooting ' Give our money back'.
It all ended somehow but on a very ugly note. Phew!
