Kannada Actor Chetan Kumar Gets Bail For Rs 25,000, Days After His Viral ‘Hindutva Is Built On LIES’ Tweet Got Him Arrested
Expressing personal views on social media has its own pros and cons. With varying points of views clashing on the internet everyday, sometimes, speaking one’s mind gets them into a hoard of trouble. Kannada actor Chetan Kumar too had to face a tough time when he made it to the headlines a few days back. He was arrested for his viral ‘Hindutva is based on LIES’ tweet.

A complaint had been registered against him by Shivakumar of Bajrang dal at the Seshadripuram Police Station for hurting Hindu sentiments. While he was sent to 14-day judicial custody by a Bengaluru court, he has now been granted bail. As per a report by ZoomTV, he has been granted bail on a “personal bond of Rs 25,000.” For the unversed, the case was registered against him under the Sections 295A and 505B of the Indian Penal Code for insulting Hindutva. In his tweet, Kumar had gone on to call Hindutva a lie and claimed that various incidents that are said to be true, had been fabricated. He had written, “Savarkar: Indian ‘nation’ began when Rama defeated Ravana & returned to Ayodhya —> a lie. 1992: Babri Masjid is ‘birthplace of Rama’ —> a lie. 2023: Urigowda-Nanjegowda are ‘killers’ of Tipu—> a lie. Hindutva can be defeated by TRUTH—> truth is EQUALITY”

Netizens had gone on to question the decision of the court for holding him in judicial custody. They demanded to know what wrong had he written that he had to get arrested. One wrote, “No arrests for calling genocide and persecution of Muslims.  but immediate arrest of Chetan Kumar. Wah what a democracy.” Another wrote, “Why has Chetan been arrested for this tweet? Every word is true and accurate. Shameful. Hindutva is not = Hinduism.” Other one wrote, “@BSBommai for which portion of this tweet u have arrested him..Is this called democracy and human rights?”

In February last year, he was put behind the bars for tweeting against Karnataka High Court Justice Krishna Dixit, who was hearing the hijab case at the time. He was released on bail later. In October 2022, Chetan again made headlines after he was booked for claiming that ‘Bhoota Kola’, which was shown in the film Kantara, was not part of a Hindu custom.
