Expressing his grief, superstar Mohanlal revealed that Balan was like an elder brother and that their ties went beyond work. Talking about it, Free Press Journal quoted the actor saying, “He was not keen to make money through his films, but was rather particular about the quality of his movies. He will be missed, not just by the film fraternity, but also by his wide circle of friends. He was an enigmatic personality.”

After producing around 33 movies, he stopped producing films in the latter part of his career. However, he often helped the younger generation of producers who came to him for advice on how to make their films successful. For the unversed, ‘Gandhimathi’ was bestowed on Balan’s mother by Mahatma Gandhi. Not only did he adopt the name, but he also turned it into a well-known brand. He had also established the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (A.M.M.A) and organised many star-studded events under the banner of ‘A.M.M.A Show’.
