The film is also setting new benchmarks. This film is creating history in all senses. The film recently broke the record for being the highest-grossing film in Tamil Nadu.

Ponniyin Selvan 1 created the record yesterday of becoming the first film ever to gross Rs. 200 crores in Tamil Nadu. The magnum opus collected Rs. 2.50 crores on the eighteenth day itself for a running total collection of around Rs. 202 crores. Before this, only two films hit the mark of the double century which are Baahubali 2 in Maharashtra and RRR in Andhra Pradesh. And now Tamil Nadu becomes the third state to join the bandwagon.
Tamil Nadu got its first Rs 150 crore grossing film in June this year and the first Rs 100 crore grosser was way back in 2017. Reportedly Enthiran also known as Robot starring Rajnikanth and Aishwarya became collected Rs. 96 crore in 2010 and Baahubali 2 collected Rs. 146 crore in 2017. These two hit the benchmarks of Rs 100 crore and Rs 150 crore back then.
However, Ponniyin Selvan 1 broke all the records in the state. The epic saga earned Rs. 125.25 crores in the first week, Rs. 56.25 crores in the second week and Rs 20.5 crores and counting till Monday of the third week which comes to Rs. 202 crores.
The film grossed Rs.304.50 crores pan India and Rs.467 crores worldwide which comes to $19.60 million. In fact, PS1 has taken over the collection of Brahmastra and has become the third highest-grossing film of the year.
Talking about the film, the stellar cast includes Vikram, Karthi, Trisha Krishnan, Jayam Ravi, and Sobhita Dhulipala besides the ‘Dhoom 2’ actress. The period drama is directed by Mani Ratnam and released on September 30, 2022 pan India.
