‘Gutka Khana Bura Hai’: Akshay Kumar Responds To Tobacco Question, Schools Reporter At Jolly LLB 3 Kanpur Event

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar recently addressed a question about tobacco at the Kanpur trailer launch event for Jolly LLB 3. During his media interaction, a reporter asked him about playing a Kanpur-based character and the city’s link with gutka (chewing tobacco). Akshay responded firmly: “Gutka nahi khana chahiye” (One should not consume tobacco).

When the reporter tried to interrupt his comment, Akshay showed his trademark wit. He asked, “Interview mera hai ya tumhara? Main bol raha hoon, gutka nahi khana chahiye, that’s it.” (Is this my interview or yours? I’m saying one should not consume chewing tobacco, that’s it.) A video of this exchange rapidly spread across social media.

The context: Jolly LLB 3, starring Akshay as lawyer Jolly Mishra and Arshad Warsi as Jolly Tyagi, features Saurabh Shukla, Huma Qureshi, Amrita Rao, and Gajraj Rao. The film, full of courtroom drama, humour, and confrontation, especially between the two Jolly characters, will hit theaters on September 19.

This isn’t the first time Akshay’s name has come up in controversies linked to gutka. In December 2023, he—alongside Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn—received a notice from the central government over acting in gutka advertisements. Amid backlash, Akshay stepped down as the brand ambassador for a pan masala brand.
