Pushkaraj Sabharwal, the father of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, paid a deeply emotional farewell to his son outside their Powai residence in Mumbai, as his mortal remains were brought home on the morning of June 17, 2025. A touching video of the tribute quickly circulated online, capturing the grief of a father who had shared a close bond with his son.
Captain Sabharwal, aged 56, was at the controls of Air India Flight AI‑171 bound for London when it tragically crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025. The Dreamliner, carrying 243 people, went down near a medical complex, claiming over 242 lives on board and several on the ground.
Just days before the crash, Sumeet had promised his father he would take time off to spend with him—a promise that remained unfulfilled . The father, a retired senior official of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, folded his hands in grief as the coffined remains arrived at Jal Vayu Vihar, a community where many aviation professionals reside. Neighbors, colleagues, and friends—including prominent figures like Niranjan Hiranandani and local MLA Dilip Lande—gathered to offer their respects.
Sabharwal was a veteran pilot with over 30 years of flying experience and more than 8,200 flight hours. A formal DNA confirmation preceded the coffin’s transfer from Mumbai airport to the Sabharwal home. From there, it was later transported to the Chakala electric crematorium for final rites.
As forensic teams continue DNA testing to identify other victims, the community mourns deeply for the lives lost in this tragedy—especially that of a son, a devoted father, and a revered pilot.
