Ajay Devgn Backs Deepika Padukone Amid Spirit Row With Sandeep Reddy Vanga: Actor Says ‘Honest Filmmakers Won’t Mind 8-Hour Shifts’
At the trailer launch of Kajol's upcoming film Maa, actor Ajay Devgn addressed the ongoing debate surrounding work-hour expectations for actresses who are new mothers. When asked about the industry's stance on such requests, Devgn remarked, "Honest filmmakers will not have a problem with this." He elaborated, stating, "Apart from being a mother and working for eight hours, people usually have started working for eight to nine hours. So, I think it is person-to-person, and most of the industry does understand all this."
This discussion comes amid reports of actress Deepika Padukone's exit from Sandeep Reddy Vanga's film Spirit. Allegedly, Padukone requested an eight-hour workday, a substantial remuneration of ₹20 crore, profit-sharing, and declined to deliver dialogues in Telugu. These demands reportedly led to her being labeled "unprofessional" by the filmmaker. Subsequently, Triptii Dimri was announced as the new female lead for the project.
In response to the situation, Vanga posted a cryptic message on social media, expressing disappointment over what he perceived as a breach of trust and professionalism. He wrote, "When I narrate a story to an actor, I place 100% faith. There is an unsaid NDA between us. But by doing this, you've 'DISCLOSED' the person that you are... Putting down a younger actor and ousting my story? Is this what your feminism stands for?"
While neither Padukone nor Vanga has issued an official statement regarding the matter, the incident has sparked discussions within the industry about accommodating the needs of working mothers and the importance of mutual respect between actors and filmmakers.
