Gurmail Kaur, Amar Singh Chamkila’s first wife, recently shared her memories of meeting Chamkila’s second wife, Amarjot, a few times before the couple's tragic deaths. For those who are unfamiliar with the background, the legendary Punjabi singer was initially married to Gurmail when he encountered Amarjot and fell in love with her. According to the film Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila, Amarjot was unaware of Chamkila's prior marriage, while Gurmail only discovered their relationship after the two got married. In an interview earlier this month, Gurmail recalled her interactions with Amarjot. She mentioned that Amarjot visited her home on several occasions, even though Chamkila usually visited alone without bringing Amarjot along. During Amarjot’s visits, Gurmail would cook rotis while Amarjot handled the vegetables. Gurmail noted that Amarjot was not skilled at making rotis and had a cook for that. Despite the complexities of their shared history, Gurmail treated Amarjot with respect out of admiration for Chamkila. Reflecting on the period following Chamkila's death, Gurmail spoke about the challenges she faced, including dealing with court cases and raising her children alone. She also took care of Chamkila’s uncle, who had become mentally unstable after the singer's death.
“The light of our house died,” Gurmail said, emphasizing the loss they felt. She explained that they received no financial support after Chamkila's passing due to the legal battles that followed. These cases persisted for 15 years, leaving the family without access to Chamkila's earnings.
