The Indian football fans at the Salt Lake (VYBK) Stadium in Kolkata witnessed a historic moment following India’s win against Hong Kong in the AFC Asian Cup Qualifier match by 4-0.
Following the match, fans at the stadium gave a grand ovation to the Indian football team as they sang Vande Mataram and it sparked a sense of euphoria. The Sunil Chhetri-led side also qualified for the AFC Asian Cup 2023.
The nearly crowded stadium cheered for the home team and it is evident they were totally impressed by the team's performance.
Interestingly, cricket and football are amongst the most supported sports in the region. Even though India rivalled against a low-ranking team, fans showed up in huge numbers and supporting chants filled up the air.
Blue Tigers also didn’t disappoint their supporters and put up a marvellous performance sealing the win.
Several new videos and pictures from the event have been going viral on social media and fans cannot get enough of them.
The recently concluded match saw India’s top scorer Sunil Chhetri doubling the lead while Manvir Singh and Ishan Pandita scored late in the second half of the game. The blue Tigers celebrated the win with their fans and they reciprocated by singing the song.
Following the match, Chettri said that he is hitting his peak and even praised his fellow teammates. Expressing his joy over the support the Indian football team received at the end, he said, “The kind of form we are in we would have loved to play at home. The way the fans are coming up and supporting us in numbers, it would be great to play here.”
