South Korean singer and songwriter Wheesung, born Choi Whee-sung, was found dead in his Seoul apartment on March 10, 2025, at the age of 43. Emergency responders arrived at his residence in the evening following a report from his family. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of his death, but no signs of forced entry or foul play have been reported.
His agency confirmed the tragic news, stating that the sudden loss has left his family, fellow artists, and fans in deep grief. They urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified rumors out of respect for his loved ones.
Wheesung made his debut in 2002 with the album Like a Movie and quickly rose to prominence in the South Korean music industry. His soulful voice and emotional ballads, including hits like Can't We, With Me, Insomnia, and A Year Gone By, cemented his reputation as a leading figure in R&B and ballad music.
In 2017, he launched his own independent label, Real Slow Company, marking a significant shift in his career. However, in recent years, he faced personal and legal struggles. In 2021, he was sentenced to one year in prison with two years of probation for the illegal use of propofol, a powerful anesthetic. He was found guilty of purchasing and using the substance multiple times in 2019. Additionally, in 2020, he was discovered unconscious on multiple occasions after using etomidate, a drug with similar effects to propofol.
Despite these challenges, Wheesung remained active in music and had been preparing for an upcoming concert with fellow singer KCM. Just days before his passing, he had posted on social media expressing excitement about the event.
His sudden death has left the music industry in shock, with fans mourning the loss of a gifted artist whose heartfelt lyrics and distinctive voice left a lasting impact. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, but his legacy as a pioneer in Korean R&B will be cherished by many.
