All day long fast is done by women for the longevity, safety, and prosperity of their husbands. There are three stories associated with this day. One story is of Queen Veervati who had kept the fast for the entire and was desperately waiting for the moon\rise to break the fast as she suffered from severe thirst and hunger. Her brothers could not see their sister like this and tricked her by making a fake moon. She broke the fast and soon she received the news of her husband’s death. She was heartbroken and wept the whole night. When Goddess appeared and asked the reason for her cry, she narrated the incident that despite her fast, her husband died. Goddess told her the truth that she was tricked by her brothers and also gave a solution to complete the fast with devotion. When she repeated the Yamaraj was forced to resurrect her husband’s life.

The second story is of Draupadi from Mahabharata. When Arjun and gone for penance in Nilgiris and other Pandavas were facing difficulties, she remembered Lord Krishna who guided Draupadi to perform pooja and keep Karwa Chauth fast. Once she kept fast Pandavas overcame all the difficulties.

The third story is of a woman named Karwa who was madly in love with her husband. Once while bathing in the river, her husband was caught by a crocodile. Karwa then gamble the crocodile with cotton yarn and asked Yamaraj to send the crocodile to hell. When Yama refused she threatened to curse and destroy him. Threatened by Karwa he sent him to hell and blesses Karwa’s husband with long life.
