Shama Mohamed Defends Dhurandhar Amid Propaganda Claims, Says ‘Did Not Show Muslims In Bad Light But Pakistanis’ During Online Debate
Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed recently reacted strongly after Dhurandhar was labelled a “propaganda” film on social media. The controversy began when Shama praised director Aditya Dhar for his work in the film and called the direction “excellent.” However, her post soon drew criticism from a social media user who accused the movie of portraying Muslims negatively and questioned why she was supporting what he described as a propaganda film.
Responding to the allegation, Shama Mohamed clarified that the film “did not show Muslims in bad light but Pakistanis.” She strongly objected to the comparison and wrote, “Shame on you for confusing the two.” She further added that such comments damage the image of Muslims in India and criticised the user for mixing religion with nationality.
It did not show Muslims in bad light but Pakistanis in bad light ! Shame on you for confusing the two. People like you spoil the name of Muslims in India. You are most welcome to leave India & take the citizenship of Pakistan https://t.co/dpNypFQ9VM

The argument quickly escalated into a heated exchange online. Shama reportedly told the user that he was “most welcome to leave India & take the citizenship of Pakistan.” In reply, the user defended his roots and said his family had fought for the country for generations. The back-and-forth attracted widespread attention on social media and triggered debates around nationalism, religion, and the portrayal of communities in cinema.
The controversy comes amid ongoing discussions surrounding Dhurandhar, which stars Ranveer Singh in the lead role. The film has been accused by some critics and commentators of carrying politically charged themes and promoting a propaganda-like narrative. Several public figures, including YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and critic Prathyush Parasuraman, have questioned the film’s storytelling approach. At the same time, many from the film industry have defended the movie, arguing that it should be viewed as a fictional cinematic work and not as political messaging.
