Shocking! 65-Year-Old Thai Woman Wakes Up In Coffin Moments Before Cremation After Being Declared Dead Without Certificate

A deeply shocking incident unfolded at a Buddhist temple in Nonthaburi, Thailand, when a 65-year-old woman, presumed dead, was discovered alive in her coffin just moments before her scheduled cremation.

According to temple manager Pairat Soodthoop, the woman’s brother had driven her more than 500 kilometres from Phitsanulok, believing she had died after being unresponsive and appearing to stop breathing two days earlier.  She had been bedridden for around two years, he told authorities.

The brother had hoped to donate her organs, honoring her wishes. But when he took her to a Bangkok hospital, they refused to accept her body—she lacked an official death certificate. With no certification, he then brought her to Wat Rat Prakhong Tham, a temple that offers free cremations—only to be turned away again for the same paperwork reason.

As temple staff were discussing how to obtain the document, they suddenly heard faint knocking from inside the white coffin. “I was a bit surprised, so I asked them to open the coffin, and everyone was startled,” Pairat said. “I saw her opening her eyes slightly and knocking on the side of the coffin. She must have been knocking for quite some time.”

When they opened the lid, they found her breathing weakly but alive. They called for medical help, and she was rushed to Bang Yai Hospital, where doctors ruled out cardiac arrest or respiratory failure. Instead, they diagnosed her with severe hypoglycaemia — dangerously low blood sugar.

By the evening, her condition had stabilised, and her family was told she could go home after further observation.  The temple’s abbot also vowed to cover all her medical expenses.
