Bollywood singer Sonu Nigam has made a name for himself in the music industry with his soulful voice. Having sworn off from Twitter almost 7 years ago, recently a tweet by the same Sonu Nigam surfaced on the internet and instantly went viral. The now-viral tweet criticised the people of Ayodhya and called them ‘shameless’ after Bharatiya Janata Party's defeat in Uttar Pradesh's Faizabad (Ayodhya) constituency during the recent Lok Sabha Elections 2024. Media publications without verifying the account published articles using the singer’s name.

The 50-year-old singer has now lashed out at the media publications for not cross-checking the handle before using his name to publish articles. On Wednesday, Nigam expressed his disappointed on netizens and publication mistaking the account to be his, especially since her quit the social media platform 7 years ago. Talking to Hindustan Times, he said, “I wonder how people, including the news channels that mistook him for me, didn’t do their basic sanity check by reading the description of the account. Clarifying that he doesn’t believe in making ‘sensational political remarks’ as his main focus is his work, he stated that the situation is alarming especially for his family’s safety. The Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin singer said, “This is the kind of nastiness that forced me to quit Twitter seven years ago. I don’t believe in making sensational political remarks and I only focus on my work. As reported by the Free Press Journal, Sonu revealed that he and his team have repeatedly reached out to the netizen to change their handle name as millions of people are being misled by it. “I’m often inundated with screenshots of his tweets from my well-wishers. My team reached out to him and insisted he fixed his handle name and stopped pretending to be me, as millions of people are being mislead by the use of my surname. I’m sure we will find a way to fix this,” he concluded.
