Will MS Dhoni Play IPL 2025? Here's What The CSK Stalwart Has To Say About His Participation Ahead Of The Mega Auction
Mahendra Singh Dhoni, affectionately known as ‘Thala’ by his fans, has been a cornerstone of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Despite persistent rumors and predictions about his retirement, Dhoni has continued to grace the field with his presence. Recently, Dhoni addressed the speculation surrounding his future in the IPL and his association with CSK, providing much-needed clarity to his fans and followers. During a promotional event in Hyderabad, Dhoni mentioned that his decision regarding IPL 2025 would depend on the finalization of player regulations and the retention scheme. He emphasized the importance of waiting for the rules to be formalized before making any decisions. "There is a lot of time for it. We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court. So, once the rules and regulations get formalized, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team," Dhoni stated.

The uncertainty surrounding Dhoni's future has been a significant topic of discussion, particularly after CSK appointed Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain for IPL 2024. Under Gaikwad's leadership, CSK finished fifth in the tournament and did not qualify for the playoffs, adding to the speculation about Dhoni’s next steps. The upcoming mega auction rules, which include aspects like player retention and the Impact Player rule, are still under deliberation. This lack of consensus among the ten IPL teams further complicates the decision-making process for veterans like Dhoni.

In a recent meeting with IPL franchise owners, BCCI secretary Jay Shah highlighted the constructive dialogue on various topics. The recommendations from this meeting will be presented to the IPL Governing Council for further deliberation and evaluation, which will ultimately influence Dhoni’s decision.

Dhoni, who led India to victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup, also shared his admiration for Jasprit Bumrah, calling him his favorite bowler from the Indian team. Bumrah’s exceptional performance in the T20 World Cup, where he took 15 wickets in eight matches with an economy rate of 4.17, has left a significant impression on Dhoni. "It’s easy to pick my favorite bowler because Bumrah is there. It’s difficult to pick a batsman because we have many good batsmen. But that doesn’t mean bowlers aren’t good," Dhoni remarked.

As fans eagerly await the final decisions on the IPL regulations and Dhoni’s subsequent plans, his commitment to making choices that benefit the team remains clear. Whether or not he continues to play, Dhoni’s legacy in the IPL and Indian cricket will endure, celebrated for his leadership, sportsmanship, and remarkable contributions to the game.
