Did Mohenjo Daro’s budget hit ‘epic’ proportions?

Ashutosh Gowariker’s Mohenjo Daro is one of the most-awaited films this year. But what many people don’t know is, it’s also one of the most expensive ones to hit the screens.

But why? There’s more than one reason. To begin with, the film was shot in multiple locations. It was first shot in Bhuj, then in Naigaon and then again in Bhuj, where a set was built over an area of 2.5 km. The constant to and fro, sources say, incurred a lot of expenses, which exceeded expectations and POA.
What worsened the situation was Hrithik’s leg injury. Says a source, “The film’s initial budget was Rs 150 crore, but it ended up costing almost double because of Hrithik getting injured. His surgeries delayed the shoot, thus causing a lot of loss for the producers (Sunita Gowariker and Siddharth Roy Kapur). The actor had refused to shoot in Bhuj after his surgery as the temperature there had reached 48 degrees, so they had to shift the location to Naigaon. It’s only after he recovered that he agreed to shoot in Bhuj again.” The shoot, we hear, was completed over a period of 262 days.

Mohenjo Daro, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, is an adventure-romance set in 2016 BC, with the Indus Valley Civilisation as its backdrop. The story revolves around a simple farmer (Hrithik) coming to a great city and falling in love with a girl from high society (debutante Pooja Hegde).
Despite a text message, Hrithik remained unaware for comment.
