COVID-19 pandemic has affected a lot of businesses and showbiz is also one of them. As per reports in Etimes one of the South Mumbai’s cinema halls will be converted into a mall. Dreamland Cinema, located in Grant Road, will go under redevelopment soon. The news was confirmed by the cinema owner, Yunus Supariwala. He also revealed the deets about the first and last movie screened in the cinemas. Yunus had taken over the Dreamland Cinema 35 years ago.
He said, "It is going to redevelopment and a mall will be built here but there will be a small theatre which will continue screening of films." He further shared Tezaab released in 1988 starring Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor being the first ever movie screened in the theatres. Continuing further he mentioned the last movie was Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor starrer Baaghi 3. Tezaab successfully ran in the cinemas for 50 weeks, shared Yunus with the said publication.
He was quite emotional when he said, "When I took over the cinema hall, Tezaab was the first film that was screened there and it ran for 50 weeks. The last film that played here was Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 3."
Dreamland Cinema remained one of the most popular theatres in Mumbai in between the 70s – 90s era. Critic were also too frequent in this cinema hall, he said, "This theatre made Madhuri Dixit, Shah Rukh Khan, and Jaya Pradha into stars as all these films ran for several weeks and drew an audience from all around the main city of Mumbai. Originally Dreamland Cinema was called Krishna and Sunil Dutt and Nutan's movie Milan was last movie to be screened at Krishna. Followed by Ramesh Sippy’s movie Andaz the theatre was known as Dreamland Cinema.
Along with Dreamland Cinema, a few more theatres that were shut in recent times were Ajanta, Edward, Capitol, Apsara, Opera House, Strand, Diana, Shalimar, Ganga Jamuna and Alishaan. Dreamland cinema is barely 10-12 minutes walk from Grant road railway station; located in South Mumbai, it gave the audience the luxury of gold class, ditching normal seats for comfy sofa like seats to enhance the movie viewing experience. Till they were functional they had 4 shows running on a daily basis.
