Oscar-winning actors Ben Affleck and Casey Affleck are mourning the loss of their mother, Chris Anne Affleck, who passed away at the age of 83 after battling pancreatic cancer. Though she died peacefully in her sleep on June 2, her family publicly announced the heartbreaking news this week.
According to the family's obituary, Chris Anne was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in December 2025 and was given only six months to live. Despite the grim prognosis, she remained determined to witness her grandson's high school graduation. She fulfilled that wish by attending the ceremony with her family on May 31 before passing away just two days later.
Born in New York City in 1942, Chris Anne devoted more than three decades of her life to public education, working as a school teacher for 35 years before retiring in 2008. She was also a passionate civil rights activist and participated in the Freedom Summer literacy movement in Mississippi during the 1960s.
Chris Anne played an important role in shaping her sons' early acting careers. Through her Harvard connections, she introduced Ben to casting director Patty Collins, helping him secure auditions for commercials and television projects. Ben has often spoken about his mother's dedication to education and the values she instilled in him and Casey.
She proudly stood beside Ben at the 1998 Academy Awards when he and Matt Damon won the Oscar for Good Will Hunting. Over the years, she celebrated both her sons' remarkable achievements, with Ben later winning another Academy Award for Argo and Casey earning Best Actor for Manchester by the Sea.
Chris Anne is survived by her sons Ben and Casey Affleck, along with her five grandchildren. Her legacy lives on through her lifelong commitment to education, activism, and the unwavering support she gave her family.
