Sonu Sood: If The Audience Likes To See Me Shirtless, Then What’s The Harm In Removing It?

As his film Tutak Tutak Tutiya hits the theatre today, SpotboyE.com spoke to the beefed-up actor Sonu Sood exclusively about his new role as a producer, his equation with Shah Rukh Khan and more.

You’ve become a producer with Tutak Tutak Tutiya. How did this change in role take place?
I never thought I would become a producer. It just happened by chance. When I left my hometown Boga (Punjab), my mom told me that I have all the ingredients to make a good producer.  I have learnt editing, sound designing; I also read a lot of books. As I belong to an engineering background, I am always keen to know the technicalities of film making, but somehow I could never get myself to produce a film. However, when I heard the script of Tutak Tutak Tutiya, I was convinced I can produce it. Also it had people like Tamannah and Prabhudeva, who are on the same page as me. We think alike and used to bounce ideas to each other while shooting for the film.

Your film was initially named 2 in 1. Why did you re-title the film to Tutak Tutak Tutiya?
When I saw the movie a couple of times, I thought it has a great entertainment value. There is a tinge of horror, comedy and mystery behind it.

So, I wanted the title to indicate something that people already know but would want to know more about. The day I decided to title it ‘Tutak Tutak Tutiya’, everyone was surprised. Though I am sure people will have an opinion about it, yet you can’t ignore it.

Why a horror-comedy?
I didn’t choose the film, the film chose me. I was approached to act in it but then I felt it has got potential. So, I decided to produce it.

Do you consider it as a risk?
No, I don’t! According to me a huger risk was coming to Mumbai to become an actor. So, I believe when you start living on the edge, you just have to keep exploring yourself and keep taking chances. Challenge yourself to do something that you haven’t done so far. Becoming a producer was bound to happen to me and I am glad it happened.

SRK is the narrator of this film. How did you convince him?
SRK is like an elder brother. I share everything with him and that’s why I wanted him to be a part of this film in some way. He was shooting in Prague, I called him and I asked him to be the narrator for my film. It was very kind of him to agree and go all the way to a studio there to dub and then send it across to me. His narration made the trailer special.

What do you have to say about the ‘Corporate Studio Culture’ which is slowly collapsing?
Industry survived when there were no big studios. It will still survive. Films have to be made intelligently and not by few MBA graduates who focus on making money. People who love cinema should make films.

If I wanted to make money, I would have joined my Dad’s business and not come to Mumbai and struggled. If you believe in a product, it will get financed automatically.

You’ve been in this industry for a long time. Do you think the industry has treated you well?
I am happy. When I came to this city, I was an outsider who knew no one here. But now I am working with the best of directors and actors. Miles to go, but the journey is on.

Do you think you deserve more?
I wish I could have done a lot more but no regrets! Everyone has their own fate and they get what they deserve. Few things are not in your hand and I leave them to the Almighty.

Why did you choose to produce a tri-lingual film? Was it difficult?
It’s not an easy job to make a film in three languages but we (Prabhudeva, Tamannaah and himself) have worked in films in all languages and we are known in the regional cinema. So it was a good move to make the film in Tamil and Telugu as well. We have different supporting actors in all the versions. It was a huge challenge but we did it.

How was it dancing with Prabhudeva? Intimidating?
No, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Tell us something about Prabhudeva that no one knows?
He is a grounded person, very emotional and a great technician.

Karate meets Parathe! You have also worked with Jackie Chan in Kung Fu Yoga. How was the experience?
Jackie is the most humble and nicest actor I have worked with. We bonded really well. I not only had around 40-50 lunches with him, but also travelled with him to many places. When they approached me, I asked them ‘Why me?’, but it just happened. Jackie was convinced that he wanted me in the film.

You have a great body but is it necessary for you to remove your shirt in every film? Don’t you think there should be some surprise element?
I don’t want to do it. Wherever I go, I am forced to remove my shirt. Even for Tutak Tutak Tutiya, the director convinced me to go shirtless. If the audience likes to see me shirtless, then what’s the harm in removing my shirt?

After Happy New Year, you didn’t sign a film for a long time....
I did Jackie Chan’s film. Then I lost my Dad and I was not in a frame of mind to face the camera. I took time to put things together.

Will you be producing Punjabi films as well?
I would love to produce it. I have grown up watching Gurdas Maan. Now Diljeet Dosanjh and Gippy are doing great.

We don’t hear about your link-ups. What does your wife say when you are romancing girls on-screen?
