Curtains Down On Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge

Come December 18 this year, Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut, considered as one of Indias iconic romance, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge will bid adieu to cinema halls. The last show of the film begins on the aforementioned date at 11:30 am at Maratha Mandir. The cinema hall has been screening the movie from October 20, 1995 till date. The last show will mark its 1000th week and 7000-day-run at the box-office, a record unmatched by any movie in cinema history.

Maratha Mandirs director Manoj Desai confirms the news, saying, “It has been a long journey. Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan were newbies when the film was made. Karan Johar wasnt a director either. Today, the actors are parents to grown-up kids and Karan is one of the most successful filmmakers in today's time. Yashji (Yash Chopra), Aditya and I had this desire to set a record in the industry. Were very close to achieving it.”

In August 2001, the film broke Sholays 286-week-run record at another Mumbai theatre, Minerva, with an uninterrupted 300-week run. Among the films that created a record run at the box-office in the pas include, K. Asifs epic extravaganza Mughal-e-Azam (1960), which enjoyed a 150-week run. Raj Kapoors Barsaat (1949) ran in Calcutta for 100 weeks. The Marathi film Sangte Aika (1959) celebrated a century-run in Pune, and V.Shantarams Shakuntala (1943) reigned for 104 weeks in Mumbai. Sooraj Barjatyas directorial debut Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) celebrated a golden jubilee, as did his second film, Hum Aapke HainKoun! (1994), both starring Salman Khan. Hrithik Roshans first film Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000) ran for a year, as did Aditya Chopras Mohabbatein (2000). Dharmesh Darshans Aamir-Karisma starrer Raja Hindustani (1996) ran for 50 weeks.

When asked whether producers, Yash Raj Films will reconsider their decision of taking the movie off cinemas, Desai says that the cult movie has had its run and people have had their fair share of it. I dont see a reason for them to continue, but at the same time, if they want to do so, Im willing to partner, like I have so far, says Desai. They reciprocated my gesture with a golden bell when the film completed its 500-week run. With the 1000th weeks run, I want to do something special for the audience, but theyll have to support my thought, he adds.
