Darshan Kumaar On Why He Doesn’t Do Much Leading Roles: Unless You Do Films With A Big Producer Or Director, It Gets Lost - EXCLUSIVE
Darshan Kumaar made his debut with Priyanka Chopra Jonas in the biopic Mary Kom. He played the boxer’s supportive husband in the film and was widely appreciated for his stint. He went on to do a lot of supporting roles after that including NH 10 with Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Randeep Hooda-starrer Sarbjit and Tiger Shroff’s Baaghi 2, among others. In 2020, Darshan received a lot of appreciation and recognition for his stint in the web shows Avrodh: The Siege Within and Aashram. Ask him if he feels it’s the right time for him to switch to leading roles now, and he shrugs it off.

Darshan clarifies that it is not because of lack of offers. “Actually, I am getting leading role offers on a weekly basis, especially after Avrodh: The Siege Within and Ashram. But I am focussing on offers from big producers or directors as unless you do that, your film gets lost. They know how to market your film and make it reach the audience,” he asserts, adding that he has already gone through a similar experience once before.

“It happened with a film that I did called Mirza Juliet. Most of the people don’t even know about it as it wasn’t marketed well. Very few people saw that film and the critics gave the film one extra star just for my performance and they even said that I should be given more lead roles now as I am ready for it. But the film only didn’t reach people, so that’s why, now I avoid those kinds of films,” Darshan explains, adding that it’s not easy to see your hard work bearing such results. “I put my heart and soul in that film and when it didn’t reach the audience, it was disheartening.”

Darshan will next be seen in Farhan Akhtar and Mrunal Thakur’s upcoming boxing drama, Toofan and the third season of Bobby Deol’s Aashram.
