The death hoax surrounding Poonam Pandey took an unexpected turn, echoing a past incident involving Mahesh Bhatt and Manisha Koirala. This is not the first time, the film industry has witnessed false death rumours before. In 1995, Mahesh Bhatt sparked a similar controversy by falsely declaring the death of Manisha Koirala, the lead actress in his movie Criminal. In an unusual promotional tactic for his film, the filmmaker released a newspaper poster declaring the demise of the Dil Se actress with the headline: "Manisha Koirala has passed away." Adding to the irony, Koirala's character met a fictional demise in the movie, where she was portrayed as being killed by a doctor. The film also featured Nagarjuna and Ramya Krishnan in prominent roles.

Speaking of Poonam Panday, in an Instagram video, the controversial actress revealed, "I want to convey a crucial message – I'm here and alive. Fortunately, Cervical Cancer didn't take me, but sadly, it has claimed the lives of numerous women due to a lack of awareness on addressing this disease. Unlike certain cancers, Cervical Cancer is entirely preventable."
