Amitabh Bachchan will play Vijay Barse, the retired school teacher who is behind the initiative Slum Soccer –which uses football to change the lives of hundreds of slum kids, helping them to negotiate the harsh realities of a marginalised life with the game.

Slum Soccer not only uses football to engage with children but also supplement their education and impart social messages like sanitation, life skills and gender equality. Today, the initiative supports more than 10,000 boys and girls across India. Many have gone on to find jobs in the police, railways and banks, thanks to sports quotas in recruitment processes.

Team Nagraj had met Barse in Pune. He has given an NOC. This implies that the film’s rights have been bought and there is nothing unofficial about it.

Sources say that Bachchan’s character will be somewhat similar to what Shah Rukh Khan played in Chak De! India, which released in 2007.

Given that Manjule is helming it, the film is sure to get its emotional nuances right. The filmmaker’s last film, the Marathi blockbuster Sairat, dealt with caste-crossed lovers: Prashant nicknamed Parshya and Archana aka Archie.
