Filmmaker Kunal Kohli recently opened up about the initial lack of support for Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar, revealing that many within the film industry had little faith in the project. Speaking about early reactions, Kohli shared that even some of the biggest directors he interacted with believed the film would struggle at the box office. According to him, there was a strong perception that the film would lose momentum soon after its release.
He recalled how several industry insiders predicted that the film would not sustain beyond its opening weekend. Quoting their reactions, Kohli said, “Monday ko baith jayegi,” suggesting that they were convinced the film would slow down drastically after its first few days. However, contrary to these expectations, the film performed in exactly the opposite manner. Kohli pointed out that instead of declining, the film’s performance actually improved from Monday onwards, surprising many who had doubted its potential.
Emphasising his point further, Kohli stated that industry backing is not always a determining factor in a film’s success. He said, “Even when the industry doesn’t support a film, the film still works. Nobody supported Dhurandhar.” His comments underline the unpredictable nature of box office success and how audience reception ultimately plays a bigger role than industry perception.
Kohli also drew a comparison with another film, Border 2, which faced similar skepticism from within the industry. Despite doubts and claims that it would slow down in its second week, the film went on to earn over Rs 300 crore, proving its blockbuster status. Highlighting this example, Kohli concluded that success cannot be measured by industry opinions alone. “It doesn’t matter if the industry supports you or not,” he said, reinforcing the idea that strong audience connect can override all initial criticism and negativity.
