Akshay Kumar starrer Pad Man has just been announced as the recipient of the prestigious National Film Awards 2019. The film was awarded the Best Film with a social message. Pad Man is Akshay Kumar's wife, Twinkle Khanna's debut production venture and the actor reveals she couldn't believe that the film won a National Film Award. The list of winners was announced in Delhi by director Rahul Rawail amidst other jury members. Pad Man also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte in the lead.
Pad Man, a 2018 release, is based on the real-life story of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who invented low-cost sanitary pads after seeing how his wife and the women in his family suffered because of lack of accessibility to better sanitation. Pad Man is directed by R Balki and did go on to become a huge hit of 2018. Akshay Kumar on winning the National Award remembers how last year on the sets of the film both Akshay and Sonam were told about winning National Award for Rustom and Neerja respectively. Read his entire statement below.
"I was in the midst of Mission Mangal promotions when Tina called me asking if it was true? If Pad Man had actually won a National Award for Best Film On Social Issues. All my tiredness of promotions vanished hearing this news. I remember it was on the sets of Pad Man only that Sonam and I got the news of winning our respective National Awards last year. So life has come a full circle and I couldn’t be happier for Tina for winning this with her debut production and of course R.Balki for putting it all together and the entire team behind Pad Man. Not just that, Chumbak, a Marathi film I presented, Swanand Kirkire won the National Award for Best Supporting Actor for that film. Overall, it’s been a rewarding day."
Sending out a big congratulations to Akshay and the proud
wifey and producer Twinkle Khanna
