Omung Kumar: I gave Randeep one month to lose weight

The first official poster of Omung Kumar’s Sarbjit was unveiled in Delhi yesterday, by BJP President Amit Shah and Union minister Nitin Gadkari.

While Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Richa Chadda looked resplendent in traditional Indian attires, Randeep Hooda, who plays the title role, was absent.

About his lead actor’s drastic transformation for the role, the filmmaker said: “Randeep’s look has already shocked many people. I had given him one month to lose 18 kg. Sarabjit Singh had spent 23 years in Pakistani jails after trespassing into their territory. He did look that emaciated and I wanted my actor to portray the same.”

Aishwarya, who plays Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur in the film, said: It’s been an intense and emotional journey. I never tried to relive that experience and nor would I wish anyone else to. I will not even say ‘go and watch this film’; it’s more about understanding this family’s journey than just watching a movie.”

Richa, who will be seen as Sarabjit’s wife, adds: “It was an extremely painful experience. This is going to be a memorable film. We have tried to showcase this family’s trauma without being judgemental. We also want to convey the message that violence and wars are meaningless.”
