Ram Gopal Varma Gives Clarification On The Controversy Around His Upcoming Lesbian-Crime Film Dangerous- EXCLUSIVE
Ram Gopal Varma who faced backlash over his tweet announcing his upcoming Lesbian/Crime Drama, Dangerous, clarifies his stance on the same
Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma who has given Bollywood some huge hits like Rangeela and Satya is currently on a professional roll. In recent years, RGV hasn’t had much success with his projects but the filmmaker has joined hands with a new OTT platform, Spark OTT, and is making multiple projects for them. The most recent one is his next directorial D Company, that focuses not just on the life of Dawood Ibrahim but also about how he made a street gang in Dongri into an internationally dreaded syndicate, D Company.
Apart from that, RGV announced two new projects for the platform in just the last 24 hours itself. The first one is touted to be the first Lesbian/Crime film of India, and is called Dangerous. The other is titled Tablet and is about a new medicine which stops ageing and death, the biggest boon of all time to mankind that is soon realised to be the biggest curse.
While talking about Dangerous, RGV had stated in his tweet that the film is about “two women who, because of bad experiences with men, passionately fall in love with each other”, and how their affair throws them in a dangerous situation. However, the statement didn’t go down well with the Twitterverse.
The filmmaker faced backlash from people for saying that bad experiences with men turn women into lesbians and for sexualizing the community through the film. However, RGV clarifies that he wasn’t making a statement with his tweet. “The point is that I am talking about these specific characters. I am not making a general opinion on this issue. I am not doing that. I am just saying that these two characters in the context of this story, have both had some bad experiences with men. That kind of drives them towards each other. That is not a generalised thing to be taken,” he asserts.
Ask RGV if he thinks that his bold opinions on social media have kind of isolated him in the industry and created professional rift with people within the industry, and he denies it. “The whole point of social media is to express yourself, state your opinions and have that freedom of expression and that’s what I do. My friends understand that and if it is taken in a bad light by some people, that doesn’t make a difference to me,” he concludes.
