Ranbir returns Rs 10 crore to Tamasha producers

Ranbir Kapoor has done the unthinkable – in order to prevent Tamasha from being written off as a box-office loser. In a thoughtful gesture, he has returned “a substantial part of his fee” to the film’s co-producers UTV and Sajid Nadiadwala.

“No actor reduces his fee,” a source said. “In fact, UTV’s Siddharth Roy Kapur and Sajid Nadiadwala should be grateful to Ranbir for giving back a substantial amount of his contracted fee.”

Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Tamasha was the director’s second film after Rockstar with Ranbir. “It was ridiculous to cast Ranbir and Deepika in an arty film. They had become darlings of the nation after Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, the audience expected to see them in a film which was more accessible and feel-good,” the source added.

According to tradewallas, Tamasha was sold to distributors at an excessive price, escalating the risk factor tremendously.

The amount, which Ranbir, is said to have returned is in the region of Rs. 10 crores.

Deepika, another source stated, has returned close to Rs. 5 crores.

Immediately on its release last year on November 27, Tamasha had drawn bipolar reactions. Reviewers and discriminating viewers raved about it, but the masses didn’t take to the film as kindly.

With Ranbir reducing his price and Deepika following suit, Tamasha has just about recovered its costs and can be rated as an ‘average earner.’ Trade sources confirm that it cost was about Rs. 70 crores but was farmed out to distributors at an inordinately higher cost.

Ranbir didn’t wish the distributors to suffer high losses and so made the thoughtful gesture.

Incidentally, this is not the first time that Ranbir has resorted to fair ethics. When he did not like the script written by his childhood friend Vikramjit Singh, he declined politely but not without returning the initial signing amount to the producer of the aborted project.

Neither did he ditch Vikramjit: he agreed to do a guest role in Roy, the next script which his friend came up with.

Roy did draw an initial audience because of Ranbir’s guest appearance plus a chart-topping music score. As for the rest of the film and the presence of Arjun Rampal in the lead role, the less remembered the better.
