Rani Mukerji On Busting Industry Stereotypes; Says, 'Have Always Believed In Letting My Work Do The Talking
Rani has delivered a hattrick of hits and also busted industry stereotypes as a married leading lady who is also a mother. She insists that she lets her work do the talking and nothing more
With Mardaani 2 becoming a hit, Rani Mukerji has scored a hattrick of hits with her last three films Mardaani, Hichki and Mardaani 2. But what’s most interesting about this feat is that with her three hits, Rani has smashed stereotypes that actresses have battled for generations. Rani’s first of the three hits, Mardaani, came right after her wedding. For long, it has been said that married actresses limit their careers. With Mardaani, Rani threw out this stereotype and she did this in 2014!
Rani’s next hit, Hichki (2018), came after she had Adira and she had taken a sabbatical from acting. According to industry beliefs, a leading lady who becomes a mother can bid adieu to her career in acting because no one wants to see a mother on screen – a clear, sexist point of view. Rani dashed those stereotypes too with her global blockbuster. And her latest hit, Mardaani 2, comes when she is a multi-tasking mother, who can juggle her career and personal life with aplomb, ensuring that she can pay equal attention to both. Her next film is the much-awaited Bunty Aur Babli 2 and we couldn’t be happier that we will continue seeing Rani on screen!
Rani says, “I have always believed in letting my work do the talking and not pay heed to what the stereotypes said about actresses. Having been in the industry for a while now, I’m aware of loose conversations like a woman ceases to be a leading actor once she is married or how she can say bye to her career if she becomes a mother. It’s regressive thinking and I’m delighted with the love that audiences have showered on my last three films.”
She adds, “Over the years, I have seen more and more women joining the workforce of our country and being self-made, independent and ready to chase their dreams. I see married women, women with children balancing their work and personal life beautifully. They have really helped change the perspective of society. I have been an actor ever since I grew up. I love what I do and I want to continue being an actor for as long as I would want to and as long as audiences want to see me on screen. So, the validation from audiences matters a lot and I’m thankful for the support I have received for Mardaani, Hichki and Mardaani 2. It motivates me to push myself more and do better work with each film.”
For Rani, her hattrick of hits were all social entertainers. She says, “It is important that cinema holds up a mirror to society from time to time and tells us all about the conditions that we live in, tells us how we should be kind and empathetic to fellow human beings and also trigger a call to action against such issues. I’m delighted that Mardaani, Hichki and Mardaani 2 have spread important messages to people across our country.”
The versatile actress adds, “People only connect to the storyline of a film when it evokes a strong emotion. They can either connect to it because it is truthful, authentic or shows reality like never before, like in our attempt with Mardaani and Mardaani 2. They can even feel for characters that inspire, that motivates and shows people that they can also rise above their circumstances and become a winner like Naina Mathur in Hichki. But most importantly, a film needs to entertain because people want to receive such a message in the most engaging manner. That’s why they go to a theatre to watch films.”
