Noted Marathi filmmaker Nagraj Manjule, who is best known for directing films like 'Sairat 'and 'Fandry', will next be seen donning the director’s hat for the upcoming web series titled ‘Matka King’. Manjule has collaborated with popular Bollywood producer Siddharth Roy Kapur for his next show, which is based on the theme of betting. Set between the 1960s and the 90s, 'Matka King' is said to be inspired by true events and the life of Ratan Khatri-who is known as the founding father of gambling in India. Ratan is also called the Matka King.
According to the series' official logline, the forthcoming series will capture "the culture of Mumbai’s teeming working classes" in the 60s and 70s, and how the nation progressed through their lives and the 'betting syndicate' operated by Khatri.
Expressing his happiness over working with Nagraj, Siddharth said in a statement “Nagraj Manjule’s Sairat is one of my favourite movies of the last decade and I’m thrilled to be collaborating with him to tell this fascinating story that we hope will resonate with viewers across India and the world.”
Manjule added that he is quite excited to narrate a “unique story” with this upcoming series. He said, “I am looking forward to this new opportunity of being able to tell a very unique and captivating story on OTT and partnering with Sid Roy Kapur who shares a common creative vision. I truly hope that the viewers enjoy the world of the Matka King as much as we are enjoying the process of creating it!.”
