Legendary actress Rekha truly needs no introduction, thanks to her amazing on-screen performances. In her illustrious long career, the veteran actress has many blockbuster and evergreen movies to her credit, which are still loved by her ardent fans. Her iconic movies such as Umrao Jaan, Khoobsurat, Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Utsav, Khoon Bhari Maang are regarded as classics of Hindi cinema. Rekha had been a part of both commercial and art cinema. In an old interview, she had shared her views on art films.

Back in 1986, while speaking to BBC Urdu, the actress was asked whether she had worked in an art film. Rekha said, “Many. She named a few, “Vijeta, Kalyug, and Musafir with Naseeruddin Shah.” Rekha then asked the interviewer what he refers to as an “art film and he stated he thinks “art film is a low-budget film.” Sharing her thoughts, Rekha mentioned that for her “a film is a film.” “Silsila was an art film, then, because it was very realistic,” she added.


In the same interview, the ‘Koi... Mil Gaya’ actress also spoke about working on Muzaffar Ali’s period musical drama ‘Umrao Jaan.’ She revealed that she was quite stunned to receive a National Award for the movie as she didn’t know a word in Urdu. “I never took any training for Umrao Jaan. I know it’s difficult to believe but I have never learned a word in Urdu. I shouldn’t be saying this but even today, I have problem in “ki” and “ka”. I don’t think I did anything special to deserve a National Award for Umrao Jaan,” Rekha was quoted saying.
