In 2018, she confronted the daunting diagnosis of stage four metastatic cancer, a battle that seemed insurmountable with just a thirty per cent chance of survival. Undeterred by the grim prognosis, Sonali embarked on a relentless quest for recovery, undergoing gruelling treatments at a hospital in New York City. Her unwavering determination and indomitable spirit saw her emerge victorious and declared cancer-free in 2021. Throughout her arduous ordeal, Sonali displayed remarkable grace and transparency, bravely sharing her bald images on social media, symbolizing her defiance against the disease and refusal to succumb to despair. Reflecting on her initial reaction to the diagnosis, she admitted to grappling with disbelief and questioning the unfairness of her plight. Yet, she found solace in shifting her perspective from "why me?" to "why not me?"—acknowledging her own strength and resilience while expressing gratitude that her loved ones were spared from such tribulations. In her own words, the actress further said, “I couldn't believe that this could happen to me. That's when I started to change the way I thought. Instead of 'why me?' I started asking, 'Why not me?' I started to feel grateful this wasn't happening to my sister or my son. I realized I had the strength to deal with this, I had the resources to go to the best hospitals, and the support system to help me through this. Starting to ask 'why not me?' helped me start the healing process."




In her candid revelations, Sonali disclosed the profound psychological impact of her altered appearance, acknowledging the initial fear and discomfort she experienced.
