Vidya Balan Opens Up On Gender Bias Issue In The Society; Recalls A Dinner Table Conversation That Left Her Boiling With Anger
National Award-winning actress Vidya Balan revealed she too has faced gender bias in her life. Gearing up for her first release of 2021, Sherni, on the OTT platform, in an interview with Times Now Digital, opened up on facing gender bias. Balan also recalled an incident that left her angry. The Shakuntala Devi actress states that all of us tend to judge each other, but it is a little sharper with women in our society.

She said, "I think all of us have faced gender bias and not just by the members of the opposite sex. Even I think we all tend to judge each other, box each other as human beings and it’s a little sharper for women or with women. Of course, I have faced gender bias." When asked how she tackles these issues, she revealed that she laughs off, but at the same time it leaves her infuriated. Then giving a piece of advice to the ones, however, she shares it happens less now.

"I get angry... I get angry and then I just give them a piece of my mind. It happens much less now, but still," said the actress.
Recalling one such incident from a dinner table she got two different reactions when she revealed that she doesn’t know how to cook. While people at the dinner were all okay with her husband, Siddharth Roy Kapur not knowing it, their reaction to her was quite different. She said, "I remember people telling me over a dinner that Oh my god, you don’t know how to cook. I said, 'No both Sidharth and I don’t know how to cook'. They said, 'But you should know how to cook na..."

Vidya adds, "I wanted to say, why should it be any different for Sidharth and me?" While the Sherni actress revealed her mother telling her all her life to learn cooking, she now feels she should have learnt it. "I would say why the hell should I learn to cook, I will earn enough to hire a cook or marry a man who can cook," said Vidya. "During the first lockdown, I did try my hand at cooking, but that was only to give our live-in house help some help, some rest because she was doing the cooking three times a day. So only to help her, because Sidharth was like I am not going to do anything to help her with her cooking. But I thought this was a good opportunity for me to just try and few things that I like, I tried them and that’s it," said Vidya.
