As ironical as it is, I think that even today, Shah Rukh is more excited about his non-romantic roles than the ones that the audience love. Brand Shah Rukh might revolve around his romantic image, but he still has the hunger to do things differently. He’s become so big that it’s sometimes too hard for him to do different things, but you can see the struggle when he makes movies like Ra.One and Chennai Express. In some ways, he’s still the struggling newcomer that he was 20 years ago because in his heart, he’s still a child with a fascination for action, superheroes and science fiction. Every now and then, he’ll tell me, “Yashji chalo Deewar banate hain.” (Yashjilet’s make Deewar.) I wish I had it in me. I wish I could do it for him. But I can’t. I can’t make a movie for him, I have to make movies for myself. I have to do the kind of work I will enjoy doing, I have to bring to life the kind of emotions that today’s audience feels. Deewar’s time is gone. Trishul’s time is gone. That kind of passion doesn’t have a place today. Or maybe it’s me. Maybe I can’t handle that much intensity anymore. I wish I could fulfil this dream of Shah Rukh’s, but I can’t.
