Movie Review: Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk Is The Most Relevant Film You Can Watch Today
Ang Lee has taken a bold step by making a post-war film. And supporting him in this endeavor are big names in the star-cast like Vin Diesel, Kristen Stewart, Steve Martin and Chris Tucker. So, what is Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk all about? And does it have an entertaining quotient? finds out.

A group of soldiers became overnight celebrities after they face action on the battlefield in Iraq. One of them, a 19-year-old Billy Lynn (Joe Alwyn) becomes the centre of attraction when found footage shows him killing one of the enemies by slitting his throat in a bid to save his fallen captain, Shroom (Vin Diesel). The soldiers, collectively known as Bravo, now are on a tour all over America and the film has them attend a Thanksgiving football game. As Billy remembers his time in the battle, the world around him is busy getting along and some of them are looking for their own profits.

Ang Lee has come up with a thought provoking and amazing film that quite entertaining. It’s the novelty of the concept that keeps the audience hooked and the human touch in the script that keeps them entertained.

What Lee portrays through this film is the dizzying speed that the world moves in, having no time for any real emotion and gratitude. There’s a Producer who isn’t bothered about who the soldiers are or what they’ve done – she’s just making sure that they look the best on her show.

There’s this assistant they’ve been given who very inconveniently leaves them on the stage after their performance with Destiny’s Child. But then, that same guy wins the audience’s hearts over by remembering to get our Billy the medicine he wanted. Of course, there’s this business magnate who’s looking to leech off the Bravo’s popularity and is looking to movie out of it.

Billy Lynn is a spectacular character who’s one of the most layered one we’ve seen in recent times. His back-story is one that is staple during wartime – small-time criminals get enlisted in the army to avoid jail-time. His sister, Kathryn (Kristen Stewart) feels guilty because she plays a role in him facing prison in the first place – and is trying to have him delisted from the army.  All this and more adds to the emotional heft that this film has.

But what Lee and the scriptwriter (Jean Christopher Castelli) does, in one swift stroke, is 'humanise' the army once and for all. It has been done in other epic war dramas where the soldiers show their human side, but Lee’s Bravo team shows something more disturbing. Soldiers today are younger, come from all walks of life, all ethnicity and shrug off their wounds and problems for the better of the country. How long they can do that is a question nobody wants an answer to.
