Movie Review: Nine Lives Is a Fur Ball Of Fun

Kevin Spacey, you have been missed. We welcome you back to the big-screen, even if you are spending half your role voicing a cat. Nine Lives is pretty good fare and a film that the entire family can enjoy – which is rare these days.
Kevin Spacey is Tom Brand, the owner of Firebrand, who has been neglecting his wife, Lara (Jennifer Garner) and Rachel (Malina Weissman) because of his business concerns. Things take a turn for the worse when Tom’s business associate tries to snatch his business from him.
Tom’s son, David (Robbie Amell) is in a quandary after his father meets with an accident and goes into a coma. He then tries to get hold of the business. But before we get there, Tom meets a mysterious pet-shop owner, Felix Perkins (Christopher Walken), when he tries to adopt a pet cat for Rachael on her birthday. Due to some rather funny circumstances, Tom’s soul pops into the pet cat he had decided to adopt. Now, Tom, as the cat, has to prove his love for his family if he wants to return to his human form.
The story might seem tacky, but it all becomes believable when the likes of Kevin Spacey and Jennifer Garner are giving their best to the roles. For those who can’t be bothered about the script, they have enough big-screen funny cat moments to keep them giggling and entertained through the film.
There’s enough emotional heft here to capture the audience’s interest, and who doesn’t like a little bit of business competition to spice up the proceedings?
Director Barry Sonnenfeld is right at home with this fluffy project and once again impresses, bringing the colourful, mostly harmless characters to life. So, if you are up for a sweet, entertaining family comedy – Nine Lives should be your choice.
