The news was confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, stating that Gossett died at a rehabilitation center in Santa Monica, California. While the exact cause of his death remains unknown, he had been battling respiratory illness and prostate cancer in recent times.

In a heartfelt statement released by his family to The Hollywood Reporter, they expressed their deep regret over his passing and requested privacy during this difficult time. Gossett was celebrated for his powerful portrayals in various tough roles, particularly in 'An Officer and a Gentleman', where he played Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley with a menacing presence, pushing Richard Gere's character to his limits at an officer candidate school.

As the second Black man to win an Academy Award for acting, following Sidney Poitier, Gossett's legacy in the industry is profound. His dedication to his craft was evident in his preparation for roles, such as undergoing 30 days of training at a Marine Corps Recruitment Division for 'An Officer and a Gentleman'.
