Ian McKellen Reveals The Moment He Took Aim At Donald Trump While Filming Avengers: Doomsday
Veteran actor Sir Ian McKellen has shared a humorous behind-the-scenes story from the set of the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday, revealing how he channelled his emotions during a major action sequence involving his iconic character Magneto.
Speaking at an open-air cinema event in Rome, the 87-year-old actor recalled filming a scene in which Magneto was tasked with causing large-scale destruction in New Jersey. According to McKellen, directors Anthony and Joe Russo wanted him to appear even angrier while performing the sequence.
While recounting the moment, McKellen explained that the filmmakers encouraged him to look more furious and act as though he genuinely hated what he was destroying. To help himself get into character, the actor came up with an unexpected response.
Re-enacting the scene for the audience, McKellen revealed that he shouted “Mar-a-Lago,” referring to US President Donald Trump’s Florida estate, to fuel the rage required for the performance. The remark drew laughter from the crowd attending the event.
McKellen is set to reprise his role as Magneto in Avengers: Doomsday, marking the return of several classic X-Men characters to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film will reunite him with longtime co-star Patrick Stewart, who is also returning as Professor Charles Xavier. The highly anticipated superhero film is being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and is scheduled for release in December 2026.
During the Rome event, McKellen also reflected on his long career and introduced one of his favourite films, Jacques Tati’s 1953 comedy Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday. He shared memories of watching the film as a teenager and spoke about the lasting impression it left on him.
Apart from Avengers: Doomsday, McKellen also confirmed that he is expected to return as Gandalf in the upcoming Lord of the Rings film The Hunt for Gollum. The actor continues to remain active in major film projects despite recently recovering from a stage injury suffered in 2024.
His latest comments have generated significant buzz among Marvel fans eagerly awaiting Magneto’s return to the big screen.
