The White Tiger director and Oscar nominee Ramin Bahrani was recently subjected to racist comments in the USA. He said that he had to do a Zoom interview on his phone while he was in the street in Atlanta, and it was while he was speaking during the interview, a bystander shouted ‘Go back to your own country.’ Priyanka Chopra condemned this, and came out in support of Ramin Bahrani.
While narrating the incident, Ramin Bahrani told People Magazine that he was doing a Zoom Q&A session with The White Tiger’s executive producer Ava DuVernay when he was faced with racist remarks from a bystander. He said that he was in Atlanta in a residential neighborhood where he had been directing a TV pilot for Apple. He had to conduct the Zoom interview with Ava on his phone while they were still in the street. Ramin noticed a car parked behind him, and when the driver of the car saw him and his South Asian colleague, he hurled racist remarks at them and said, 'You all think you run the world. You all don't run s---‘. Ramin Bahrani said, “His friend told him to calm down and leave it alone. As the driver pulled away, he shouted, 'Go back to your own country!’”
Priyanka Chopra Jonas reacted to this, and told People magazine, “Asking me about my thoughts on what happened to Ramin is a sign of where we stand today, and the work we have to continue to do. So my question in response is - who belongs here, and who doesn't? Isn't America a melting pot of all people from all backgrounds? This country was built on the back of immigrants in search of the American dream, a life of freedom, opportunity, and a safe place not only for themselves but for their families."
Meanwhile, The White Tiger stars Priyanka Chopra, Rajkummar Rao and Adarsh Gourav. Filmmaker Ramin Bahrani has received a nomination for Oscars 2021 in the Adapted Screenplay category for The White Tiger. Priyanka Chopra not only stars in the film, but she is also an executive producer.
