Emmys 2019: Bandersnatch’s Win Ushers In A New Era Of Storytelling
When on Monday morning, Netflix original Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie, one thing was clear. The experimental was now the mainstream – the lines had blurred.

Netflix has always led the way when it has come to experimental content. Their latest experiment comes in the form of an addition to the Black Mirror, a popular dystopian show anthology. So what makes Bandersnatch so special? Set in 1984, the show is about a young computer programmer who begins to lose sense of his reality when he begins working on a video game. Now comes the mind-blowing part, Bandersnatch is interactive – meaning, your decisions affect the outcome. You, the viewer, are in charge of the narrative.

Never seen before in the world of mainstream content, Bandersnatch was revolutionary. It elevated the very sphere of story telling by putting the viewer at the very centre of it. It was fresh, it was exciting, and it was history being made.

The format of the show also makes Bandersnatch a show with multiple possibilities. There is so much to discover and each decision could change the next event. You could watch and re-watch and not get bored of it. Is it a video game? Or is it a television show? The truth is, it is both and while everyone can have different opinions of the film, it is impossible to pass a judgment. Everyone, after all, has their own experience with it.

Are interactive shows and films the future? Only time will tell. But till then, Bandersnatch reminds us that innovation always drives stories and makes the world of digital content a truly experiential one.
